Summer Reading Camp
Overview
Halifax County Schools provides intervention strategies to help students reach grade-level proficiency. Grades PreK-12 are offered summer enrichment and remediation when funds are available and are conducted in accordance with standards or regulations established by the State Board of Education. The summer programs are funded with federal and state-allotted funds. The Read to Achieve Summer Reading Camp operates according to state requirements. The district provides transportation for summer school. The summer programs operate under one comprehensive Prek-12 summer camp but at two locations due to the geography of the school district. The Overall PreK-12 Summer Camp is coordinated, organized, and facilitated as follows:
- The elementary and secondary directors begin the planning of the PreK-12 summer camp in April with an emphasis on scheduling, funding sources, number of at-risk students, number of staff, testing, supplemental instructional resources, training dates for coordinators & personnel, and availability of desired campsite locations.
- The summer camp announcement is communicated to all staff by the end of March.
- Elementary and secondary principals assist the Office of Human Resources in recruiting highly qualified staff by way of the principals' recommendation in March-April.
- Interested candidates sign up for extended employment to meet by the end of April.
- Candidates' names are submitted for board approval in May.
- Of the candidates, an elementary and secondary coordinator is named to the summer campsites
- The elementary and secondary directors meet with the campsite coordinators to assist with camp coordination roles & responsibilities.in May.
- Hosting elementary and secondary school principals monitor and provide guidance to the summer camp coordinator accordingly.
- The elementary, secondary, and Whole Child directors secure the curriculum, courses of study, textbooks, instructional materials, and other services of the summer school are comparable to those provided in the regular school year and accreditation standards.
- The testing and accountability coordinator and elementary/secondary directors are responsible for the reporting of summer school data and ensuring the transfer of summer school credits to the appropriate schools.
