Unpacking Standards
Overview
Teachers bring a richness and depth of understanding to teaching and learning by communicating the requirements of each standard taught. "They develop and apply strategies to make the curriculum rigorous and relevant for all students and provide a balanced curriculum that enhances literacy skills."
Unpacking standards is the key to aligning what is taught and tested. Dense standards may contain multiple verbs and/or multiple noun phrases or genres within the context of the learning. All students need to know systematically and explicitly "what they must know and learn" in their grade level standard course of study.
When unpacking standards, teachers study a standard closely to identify the mode in which the learning is expressed, as well as the scope and sequence of the content, and the context in which the learning should occur. They focus on narrowing dense standards into smaller lesson chunks to ensure the transfer of learning.
